It's not like something like Etrian Oddyssey Untold or Persona Q has great original writing but they still have much better voice acting than Bravely Default or World of Final Fantasy or this apparently. Chrono Trigger has everything: an innovative and fun combat system, between 10 and 30 endings depending on who you ask, a magnificent story, great spells and attacks, a badass 'hidden' recruitable character, and replay value that dwarfs that of most modern games. Sure you can only elevate the source material so much, but good localization and voice acting can still be an asset, or at least not a liability. Only made worse when they moved to having audio dialogue from FFX onwards. A JRPG problem that's been around since forever. Hard to deliver the vocal goods when the dialogue writing is hokey and cliche. I've never gotten around to playing Secret of Mana, so maybe I'll play this if it turns out well, but I'd be more excited if it was a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake. Why can't Square of all companies get better voice direction? Seriously, that is a terrible delivery for the first voiced line in your trailer.

Before you play the big-budget remake on PlayStation 4, experience the original. That voice acting certainly doesn't make a good first impression, and the 3D treatment looks underwhelming. This mobile Chrono Trigger is based on the expanded Nintendo DS version. Considering how shitty everything Mana-series related has been post-PS1, I'm not convinced Square is interested in giving this the attention and care it deserves. Played through the entire game again with my wife several years ago, too, and still enjoyed it. I have a real soft spot in my heart for Secret of Mana it was the first RPG I ever played, and I have fond memories of going through the entire game with my brother when we were young.
